Once upon a time and not very long ago, I despised the concept of "green"! It was too much work and far too much trouble! But then I began reading article after article about the air quality and the inversion layers. Developing asthma helped change my mind, too! Then when I adopted Gracie, everything really hit home! I needed to think in the now as well as the future-for Gracie's sake- and all the children who will come after. We should want them to have the kind of world that our grandparents were lucky enough to have-before aerosol cans and harsh liquids that kill bad AND good! So tying the past, present and future together has been difficult, but oh! so worthwhile! First of all, I tried to remember what my grandmother had used for cleaning! She used white vinegar for everything! And now so do I! There's nothing better! So many of my tips use this miraculous liquid! Here we go! Pay attention! You might just help save this old earth of ours!
No. 1
Use vinegar to clean your floors. This even works on hardwood! 1/2 Cup to a 1/2 gallon of water should do it! Talk about sparkle! Keeps your mop smelling sweeter, too!
No. 2
If you have a problem with odors after cooking (I know I do), pour vinegar in a small open bowl on your counter. It works like magic!
No.3
Mix vinegar with baking soda to form a paste and use to clean surfaces! The reaction of the two to each other causes the magic!
No. 4
If you have trouble with weeds, spray them with straight vinegar. But be careful not to spray your flowers! This works sooo well, killing the weeds overnight. I even tried pouring straight vinegar down the taproot of a pokeweed. This monstrous plant grew 10 feet tall and I couldn't get it to die. It took approximately 5 days of this treatment, but it worked! Sure the birds like the berries but that darn plant and some smaller ones had taken over in my garden! Who knew those small square berry suet feeders sold everywhere use POKEBERRIES! No truth in advertising there!

For use in a bathroom try the following mixture:
1 teaspoon Borax
1/2 teaspoon liquid dish detergent
1/4 cup white vinegar
2 cups water
Combine in a spray bottle and shake. Use on counter surfaces, sinks, tubs, etc. and wipe clean.
No. 6
Rub your hands with vinegar after handling onion or garlic to get rid of the smell! Water alone just doesn't get it!
No. 7
Clean copper with lemon juice and salt! My grandmother had lots of copper so as a child I would get to help her. There's just something about seeing blackened copper turn bright again!
No. 8
Charcoal in a refrigerator helps absorb odors!
The charcoal actually traps the particulate matter that carries the compounds that make up odors.
So does an open box of baking soda!
No. 9
My grandmother swore by this one! Put clothes starch in your mop's water for a beautiful shine on your floors, especially lineoleum! So popular back in the day!
No. 10
I could never figure this one out but...Rain spots on suede shoes disappear when rubbed with an emery board.
No.11
Baking soda is very good for cleaning stainless steel and is quite effective on tannin stains from tea and coffee. Use as a paste rubbed into crockery. Or on crayon marks on walls or wallpaper. Yes! Wallpaper!
No. 12
Gracie and I have needed this next one quite a bit lately! Use lemon juice to get rid of berry stains! Also removes stains from brass, copper and stainless steel, kitchen sinks; bleach ink spots on clothing;eliminates odors from cutting boards; and combined with salt helps lift many different stains from fabrics!

Sunlight! Natural sunlight is a great alternative to harsh bleaches used in commercial cleaning products. Natural sunlight has one of the most powerful bleaching effects known to man. For stains, wet the stained area and leave it outside in direct sunlight. When dry, wet it again and repeat until the stain is gone.
Leaving things in sunlight also will reduce mold and mildew.
I could go on and on, but as you can see, old-fashioned cleaning solutions are the bee's knees! Safe for the environment and safe for the inhabitants who live in that environment!
