HarperCollins Children’s Books wants to make sure my readers are aware of the number one beginner reader series in the country. I Can Read! is the official sponsor of this conversation. It's the open door to a child’s adventure with the most beloved characters in the history of children’s literature. It a proven series for encouraging young readers from early reading together to advanced reading alone. The series debuted in 1957 with the introduction of a familiar favorite, Little Bear. It was one of the first ever easy-to-read books that children could read independently, and has been in print ever since. Now with more than 6 million I Can Read! books sold, including 200 titles, I Can Read! books is the best series to take children step by step into the wonderful world of reading on their own. Please be sure to incorporate some of this background information in your post, or reference more information on the series, along with a complete list of I Can Read! books and activities.
Here are some of my personal tips for your lettle readers!
1. The Library!
My Issaquah Library has a tremendous summer reading program for kids from reading contests to famous visiting authors to special surprise programs! Most libraries do, too. I urge you to check out your nearest location!
2. I've mentioned before that Gracie is an avid dumpster diver and thrift store diva. I don't even have to urge her to go to the book section of Goodwill. Make a game of this with your child! It's fun and Gracie has even found some 1st editions!
3. There's nothing like a children's book club. Most offer books for free or a nominal fee when you join and kids just love getting books in the mail! Who doesn't?
4. I, for one, love getting junk mail and so I sign up for everything and anything free! Sometimes I use Gracie's name and this generates mailings of free address stickers in her name! She loves it and uses the stickers to claim her books and even write more letters than she did!
To find out more about this program or to express your views and ideas, go HERE!

Another GREAT Madeline movie! I love this character and so does my daughter, Gracie! What I wouldn't give to find an Arabian lamp like Madeline and her friends do! And the 40 thieves! Ooh la la! Gracie was mesmerized by this DVD and wants to watch it again and again! Usually that trait of hers drives me crazy, but NOT THIS TIME! I watch right along with her! So even if you don't think you want to purchase this DVD for your kids or grandkids (better rethink that), BUY IT for yourself!

On Demand Education for Today's "iGeneration"
Today's students, known as the "iGeneration", are the first to crave and benefit from education "on demand" - or the option to choose where, when and how they want to learn.
To put it in context, the "iGeneration" has never known life without the Internet, being mobile, using avatars, IMing or choosing and watching content whether they are at home, in the car, at a football game or shopping at the mall. To reach them in their high-tech, high-touch world, many parents and educators are looking at how to rewire schools to match how the iGeneration learns.
Taking classes online is one way to give middle and high school students (and their school districts) new options to learn using preferred tools in a familiar environment, and even experience enhanced, one-on-one relationships with educators. Whether they're in need of more assistance, looking for wider range of classes or simply prefer to learn in a medium that they have grown up with, online learning can be a great way to fit your child's needs.
Students are increasingly able to take online classes in partnership with their local school districts. Schools facing budget cuts and a reduction in teachers are turning to online classes to supplement their curriculum, from offering classes for which they have no teachers, Advanced Placement® classes for students who excel, and credit recovery options for students who struggle. In fact, today there are 1 million children learning online, either part time, full time or between school terms. Additionally, more than 20 percent of schools and educational institutions around the country offer online classes today, and that number should grow by another 30 percent within a couple of years, according to industry research. (Simba Information).
View a Demonstration Video
We have provided a demonstration where you can view the tools and technologies online students use to engage with their teachers and classmates. Click on the following link to experience how students engage with their teachers and classmates online, in a recorded session where students from around the country come together outside of class to discuss the results of the "iGeneration" survey with their teacher and hear their insights. http://smub.it/jlj/iqlive
Also, to experience the robust curriculum offered by online learning, click on the following link - http://aventalearning.com/aventa-capabilities-demo. Once there, select the green button that says "view multi-media demo." When the demo loads, select media-rich curriculum to experience how online learning is effectively teaching today's iGeneration.
Online Learning Successes
Chicago Public Schools
Online learning is well suited for various learning styles and helps those who've fallen behind. More than 1,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) students who were at risk of not graduating from high school have received their diplomas this month with the rest of the CPS Class of 2010 after earning the credits needed to graduate through an innovative virtual learning program at 75 schools across CPS.
Military Family
Karl, a child of a military family, moved numerous times throughout his high school years, but wanted a consistent education experience. With online learning, Karl had the chance to excel at his studies and even graduated early with a 4.0 grade average. Karl embraced the independence and self-mastery that online learning fostered.
The Star Athlete
Isadora, a star tennis player, was struggling with the best way to juggle her demanding tournament schedule with a good education. Her parents enrolled her in online learning as a supplement to her local high school, so she was able to get in her two to three hours a day of tennis training - and stay ahead academically.

We welcome you to look through the website at www.onlineschoolsolutions.com, and then click on your state to find the KCDL online school serving your area.
Online Learning
Student Survey
A recent survey found that compared to traditional learning environments, online learning is proving to be an effective way in teaching today's "iGeneration" who live in a world of customized and instant feedback. Here are highlights from the survey:
72% of online students spend three or more hours on homework per week vs. 56% of students in traditional schooling.
54% of online students get more challenges when they are doing well in school vs. 49% of students in traditional schooling.
58% of online students get more help when they fall behind vs. 40% of students in traditional schooling.
Online students have more interest in attending a four year college after graduation than students in traditional schooling. 78% vs. 67%
As a product of online learning, I can attest to the valued benefit learning online can offer students. The challenges offered with online learning bring an alternative body of knowledge to students who resist traditional schooling for one reason or another!

Guardian Angels for Every Need!
Guardian Angels for Every Need
By Sue Storm
Guardian angels work with individuals to identify and pursue their purposes in life. Angel specialists are guardian angels who have expert status in a particular area. These angel specialists can help you attain good health, greater happiness, and financial well-being. The book "Angel First Aid" is a guide to connecting with angels who offer sincere love, guidance, and support.
Similar to the Angels of Abundance, here are eight different guardian angels or angel specialists to help you find happiness and fulfillment in careers, relationships, health, and pets. Read how these angel specialists can help guide you toward success in every aspect of your life.
Angel of Courage
A more prosperous future can be achieved by releasing regrets and disappointments. Begin new endeavors with a clear mind. Envision Hannah, Angel of Courage, with her curly auburn locks blowing in the wind. She leads you down a twisting and narrow wooden dock with a sailboat at the end. The aroma of salty sea air is everywhere. Focus on some disappointments you felt while growing up. Picture a big stack of boxes close to your feet. Each one of the boxes is the perfect size to fit the memories of regrets and disappointments. Put a memory in each box, placing the boxes in the sailboat. When you are finished and only happy memories remain, the sailboat sets sail and goes out to sea. Hannah walks alongside as you both leave the dock.
Angel of Careers
Manifesting professional goals becomes necessary when seeking a rewarding career. This creates a road map to success in life. Select Cory, Angel of Careers, as a guide for this exciting adventure. His notable strength surrounds you with a tremendous sense of safety for the journey. Visualize landing the perfect job. Imagine standing in the basket of a hot air balloon that sets down beside the building where your new job is located. Start looking around. Observe each detail related to the position: personalities of all of your colleagues, general policies, the working environment, and how management operates. Picture your new office
Angel of Organization
Everyday responsibilities present circumstances that can be tackled with ease. Make tasks or projects effortless and less overwhelming by utilizing this remedy. Jason, the methodical and powerful Angel of Organization, stands before you with his broad shoulders. Draw a circle, representing a pie, and divide it into six slices. Label each of the slices with the necessary tasks. Highlight the piece requiring immediate attention. Place the five remaining wedges in the order of their importance. List the actions essential for completing tasks and projects. Address each action with a well-organized approach. Appreciate Jason’s guidance while you finish one portion at a time. Savor each “bite” for its sweet taste of victory. Jason will applaud your success and offer his heartfelt praise.
Angel of Pet Care
Preparing a pet to adapt to its new home and family is important in ensuring a beneficial transition. Help the animal feel welcome and secure in its unfamiliar new surroundings. Being a compassionate, considerate, and caring angel, Thomas is delighted with your idea to establish a warm, comfortable environment
Angel of Gratitude
Families that encourage each member’s goals, visions, and dreams can prosper as a unit. Gratitude becomes a way to grow together as a family. Invite the graceful Annette, Angel of Gratitude, to join in. She is wearing a green gown and has long blond hair. To begin the remedy, gather family members around a table. Designate someone (usually a child or teenager) to make a Gratitude Box. Begin with a shoe box. Decorate it with colorful paper. Cut a hole in the top for multiple slips of paper. Individuals now write down items that have brought them happiness and for which they are grateful. All of the slips are placed in the box. Annette puts her pieces of paper in this box too. She thanks your family for letting her participate. Annette is grateful that she was invited.
Angel of Attraction
The basic principle of the Law of Attraction is “Like attracts like”; one frequency of energy will become a magnet to a separate one of equivalent vibration. Liken it to a mirror image: what reflects out into the Universe will be returned in kind. Start this technique with the spirited Terina, Angel of Attraction, by requesting that she wait nearby as you make a list of your characteristics and best qualities. Now write a list of traits your soulmate might possess. This angel is checking your lists for compatibility. Are you ready for a soulmate, or do you require a plan for improvement? Select your strategy and move forward to gain the attributes you desire in the other person. Terina suggests repeating I invoke the Law of Attraction. She then flies off to locate the love of your life.
Angel of Forgiveness
People sustain good relationships by forgiving the transgressions of friends. Learn to forgive, release, or get over past situations by use of this remedy. Theodore, Angel of Kindness, with his brown hair and olive skin, is here to offer support. He hands you a thick wad of paper. Write down one dilemma or situation you desire to remove from a friendship. This is the time to totally eliminate unhappy and uncomfortable feelings. When finished, cross out the words. Shred the sheet of paper. Quickly throw it away. Angel Theodore watches and praises your deliberate actions. He commends you for working on the friendship. Begin to think kindly about your friend. Picture the two of you in good spirits, sharing a hug. Theodore wants a hug too. A group hug follows.
Angel of Health
Breathing with conscious intention expands energy flow and supplies more oxygen to the brain. This form of breathing also releases endorphins. Peter, Angel of Health, who has dark hair and a calming demeanor, is hovering above. Now start this remedy by standing comfortably. Inhale through your nose to the count of five, while reaching your arms up toward this angel. Exhale slowly through your mouth as you count to five again, bringing your arms down to your sides. After a third repetition, feel the vibrant energy flowing through your entire body. Peter is hovering lower now and offers congratulations. The angel is very pleased and proud of you, exclaiming, “You have earned your angel wings!” Peter is cheering enthusiastically.

Happy Flag Day!
Jun 14, 1777:
Congress adopts the Stars and Stripes
Previous Day June 14 Calendar Next Day
During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that "the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white" and that "the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." The national flag, which became known as the "Stars and Stripes," was based on the "Grand Union" flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes. According to legend, Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross designed the new canton for the Stars and Stripes, which consisted of a circle of 13 stars and a blue background, at the request of General George Washington. Historians have been unable to conclusively prove or disprove this legend.
With the entrance of new states into the United States after independence, new stripes and stars were added to represent new additions to the Union. In 1818, however, Congress enacted a law stipulating that the 13 original stripes be restored and that only stars be added to represent new states.
On June 14, 1877, the first Flag Day observance was held on the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes. As instructed by Congress, the U.S. flag was flown from all public buildings across the country. In the years after the first Flag Day, several states continued to observe the anniversary, and in 1949 Congress officially designated June 14 as Flag Day, a national day of observance.

An American Hero-John Wayne
On this day in 1979, John Wayne, an iconic American film actor famous for starring in countless westerns, dies at age 72 after battling cancer for more than a decade.
The actor was born Marion Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, and moved as a child to Glendale, California. A football star at Glendale High School, he attended the University of Southern California on a scholarship but dropped out after two years. After finding work as a movie studio laborer, Wayne befriended director John Ford, then a rising talent. His first acting jobs were bit parts in which he was credited as Duke Morrison, a childhood nickname derived from the name of his beloved pet dog.
Wayne’s first starring role came in 1930 with The Big Trail, a film directed by his college buddy Raoul Walsh. It was during this time that Marion Morrison became "John Wayne," when director Walsh didn’t think Marion was a good name for an actor playing a tough western hero. Despite the lead actor’s new name, however, the movie flopped. Throughout the 1930s, Wayne made dozens of mediocre westerns, sometimes churning out two movies a week. In them, he played various rough-and-tumble characters and occasionally appeared as "Singing Sandy," a musical cowpoke a la Roy Rogers.
In 1939, Wayne finally had his breakthrough when his old friend John Ford cast him as Ringo Kid in the Oscar-winning Stagecoach. Wayne went on to play larger-than-life heroes in dozens of movies and came to symbolize a type of rugged, strong, straight-shooting American man. John Ford directed Wayne in some of his best-known films, including Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962).
Off-screen, Wayne came to be known for his conservative political views. He produced, directed and starred in The Alamo (1960) and The Green Berets (1968), both of which reflected his patriotic, conservative leanings. In 1969, he won an Oscar for his role as a drunken, one-eyed federal marshal named Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. Wayne’s last film was The Shootist (1976), in which he played a legendary gunslinger dying of cancer. The role had particular meaning, as the actor was fighting the disease in real life.
During four decades of acting, Wayne, with his trademark drawl and good looks, appeared in over 250 films. He was married three times and had seven children.

A Meditation to Take You To the Other Side
Francine, Sylvia's Spirit Guide says,
I want to take you on a journey. Ask the archetypes(angels) and your spirit guides to surround you. Put your hands upward on your thighs in order to receive grace. now close your eyes. I want to surround yourself with a purple light, the royal color of spirituality, and ask that all those who have loved you and whom you have loves-from all your lifetimes, not just this one-will come around you to bless and care for you.
you are surrounded by a circle of people stacked rows upon rosw-loved ones, your dear animal pets that you've loved, children that you've lost, fathers that have gone away, and husbands that you think are not there. All of them, come.
I want you to see yourself walking through a beautiful silver tube. As you walk, the most marvelous thing happens. It's almost as if the tube vibrates with millions of sparkles of light, so much so that some of you even walk faster, even skip a little bit, amazed at how each step, these silver sparkles enter your soul and purify it.
At the end of this tunnel is a golden light in the beautiful shape of a cross. In front of you stands three golden circles that represent your total infinity, your total God Consciousness and Father and Mother god. You make a circle with the Divinities and feel yourself part of the golden loop that is intertwined.
Now as you pass through this tube, you feel the presence of your guides on either side of you. All of a sudden a mist hangs heavy around you. You're a little bit afraid to walk because you can't see too far ahead of you; it's much like this in life.
But then you feel warm hands on you-the love of a mother or grandmother, perhaps, who comes back. You feel them gently press you to move forward, and you're suddenly aware of a beautiful golden bridge that glimmers very faintly art first out of the mist across a beautiful rushing creek. You approach it quickly, then walk across, unafraid.
Then a beautiful meadow opens up right in front of your eyes. In the distance, you see beautiful white-maned horses, frolicking, trees with fruit, and flowers on bushes growing profusely everywhere. Coming toward you are all the people who encircled you befiore. You feel their warm hands pulling you. you fell the warmth of this love surrounding you, and the embrace they give you. Green light seems to emanate from them toward you, which heals your entire body. Take as long as you want now, passing this green light through vall parts of your body, bottom to top.
Feel your father's arms around you; feel your mother's kiss lightly on your cheek; feel your husband hold you in his arms; feel your brother come up on the other side. Speak to them.
See how familiar all of this looks. It's where you came from and where you'll go back to; this beautiful place gave birth to all humankind. It's where we all came from, the Almighty God,where I live, and where you'll come back to live.
You can't stay too long this time. but from this beautiful vision that you will carry with you, you can visit there many times. Each time you do this diligently-in mind, body, and spirit-healing will be total and complete.
Right in the middle of this field, the most important thing is a gigantic amethyst crystal. go over and touch this purple crystal that resonates your soul. touch it. Feel it. Ask for any message to be sent from that crystal into you.
Ask for forgiveness for yourself-not from God, but ask for you to forgive yourself. Ask for your ego to be slain like the dragon it is, and for the truest "I Am" to come forward. It will. In doing so, you will slay the dragons of illness and hurt and despair and grief inside you.
Feel yourself relaxed. Feel yourself inhaling the purple and green glows of those around you. don't be sad to leave. You'll be here soon enough. You only came here to visit anyway.
Being yourself back down the silver tube of light, carrying with you the emerald and amethyst lights. Bring yourself all the way out as you count to three.
...from Sylvia Browne's "Journey of The Soul" Series, Book 2-"Soul's Perfection", spoken by Sylvia's Spirit Guide, Francine.

The History of Popsicles
In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson left a cup filled with powdered soda, water, and a stirring stick on his San Francisco porch. That night, low temperatures caused the mixture to freeze — and a summertime staple was born. Today, two billion Popsicles are sold every year.
1923: Epperson debuts his "Epsicle" at an Alameda, California, park. His children, who call the creation Pop's 'sicle, persuade him to change the name. Two years later, Epperson partners with the Joe Lowe Company of New York, which distributes the treats around the country.
1939: The brand introduces its mascot, a boy dubbed Popsicle Pete, who appears in ads for the next five decades.
1986: The company retires its two-stick variety (first sold during the Great Depression for a nickel) on the advice of moms, who deem it too messy.
2010 Popsicle — now owned by Unilever and made at plants in Nevada, Maryland, and Missouri — releases new Jolly Rancher — flavored pops, but classic cherry still ranks as the most popular.

Help the Men In Your Life!
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Ad Council are launching a new movement on behalf of their national public service advertising campaign designed to encourage middle-age men to learn which preventive medical tests they need to get and when to get them. Can you help us get the word out about the importance of men's preventive health care this Father's Day, during National Men's Health Week (June 14 - 20) and year round?
o Send the men in their lives this new e-card for Father's Day (http://www.dadtothedoc.org/)
o Ask your husbands, fathers, brothers, etc. to take the health quiz (http://www.ahrq.gov/healthymen/quiz.htm)
o Encourage the men you know to visit ahrq.gov/healthymen, which provides recommended ages for preventive medical tests, a health care quiz designed to test knowledge of preventive health care, tips for talking with doctors, a glossary of consumer health terms, and links to online resources to find more medical information. Also, keep an eye out for the new PSA's encouraging dad's to take care of their health.
- Tweet about your men's preventive health campaign, sharing the www.ahrq.gov/healthymen and the http://www.dadtothedoc.org/ URLs. The hashtag for the campaign is #dadtothedoc
- Let your Facebook friends know about the campaign's Facebook page (facebook.com/healthymen) and the incredible resources available.
- Sit down with the men in your life and take a look at the tools needed for a healthy future. Send the health e-card this Father's Day to remind the men you love about the importance of protecting his health this Father's Day and for many more to come.
